7. Layers and Stacking Order

Last updated 2026-10-19

The SCENE panel lists the layers of the scene in preview. Layers higher in the list appear in front. "VIEW" and "BGM" before a name mark the layers actually used as picture and sound. Layers whose media cannot be found are shown in red.

Panel controls

  • Buttons: + Add Layer (media file), − Remove Layer, the camera button (opens the add menu), Move Up and Move Down. You can also drag to reorder.
  • Keyboard: ↑ / ↓ to select, Cmd+↑ / Cmd+↓ to move, Delete to remove.
  • Add menu (camera button, or right-click an empty area of the list): Add camera / capture card… / Add media file… / Add screen capture… / Add application window capture… / Add subtitles (recognize speech)…

Stacking rules

  • Video layers stack in list order.
  • Images, PDFs, capture pictures and subtitles always appear in front of all videos; subtitles are always on top.
  • Videos are not shown in a scene that contains a PDF.
  • If a scene has a music layer, the videos' own audio is muted.

Layer context menu

  • All layers: Rename… / Hide Layer (Show Layer) / Enable Loop (Disable Loop) / Remove
  • Picture layers: Edit position / size / crop
  • Capture layers: Choose capture device…
  • Subtitle layers: Set subtitle style…, Translate subtitle… and more (chapter 13)

Editing position, size and crop

  1. Double-click the layer on the preview (or click the layer name in the layer panel, or click a picture clip in List view).
  2. Drag the middle to move, drag a corner to scale while keeping the aspect ratio, drag an edge to crop.
  3. Click outside the box, double-click, or press Esc to finish; the change is saved.

Right-click the edit box for "Reset crop", "Reset position and size" and "Finish editing"; capture layers also offer "Select display region…". PDF pages always fill the screen and cannot be moved. Whether pictures fill the frame or show in full is set by "Media Fit" in Settings.
