10. Preview, Program and Output

Last updated 2026-10-19

  • PREVIEW: for checking before going to air. Preview audio is always muted.
  • PROGRAM: what is on air. Only the program produces sound.
  • While the Program scene is selected, the preview shows the same picture as the program.
  • After opening a project, the program and external output stay black until the first take.
  • While the program is not playing, the PROGRAM monitor shows the first frame of the scene in preview as a standby image. This does not affect the external output.

Monitor controls and indicators

  • Under each monitor there is a seek bar with the audio waveform (click or drag to jump) and Play / Pause / Stop buttons.
  • The scene length is shown at the lower left of PREVIEW; the program's remaining time counts down in red under the CUT / MIX buttons.
  • Markers at the lower right of the picture: NEXT ▶, Auto To N (orange), Auto To N ▶ (green), Loop, Audio Fade On, Video Fade Out On (chapter 12).

Volume and levels

  • VOL: linked to the macOS system output volume (also in sync with the keyboard volume keys). If the output device cannot change its volume, it adjusts the selected scene's volume (0–200%) instead.
  • BAL: the selected scene's left / right balance, saved in the project.
  • The two meters show the preview level and the program output level.
  • Sound plays on the current macOS default output device.

External output

  • Press F12, choose Output → "Toggle External Output [F12]", or click "Screen Output" in the top bar to show the program full screen on the chosen display (borderless, pointer hidden).
  • The external output always shows the program on air and goes black during FTB. There is one program output.
  • Set it in Settings → General → Video Output: Resolution (1920×1080 / 1280×720 / 3840×2160), Frame Rate (23.976–60 fps, default 29.97), Media Fit (Fill frame (crop if needed) / Show full image (no crop)) and Output Screen. Clicking OK while output is on moves it to the newly chosen display.

The rundown output for the lighting and sound crew is a separate, independent display (chapter 14).
