Importing SRT
Use "Add media file…" or drag an .srt file from the media list. The file must be UTF-8 (other encodings show garbled text). Default position X 50%, Y 90%, size 60.
Creating subtitles with speech recognition
- In the layer add menu, choose "Add subtitles (recognize speech)…".
- Choose "Sound material — recognize audio of this scene or a file" and tick the audio or video to recognize. "Add another audio / video file…" is also available.
- Choose the "Spoken language", or auto-detect (tries the system language, Chinese, Japanese, English, Korean).
- "Recognize on this Mac only (no internet; used when the language supports it)" is on by default. If you turn it off, or the language does not support on-device recognition, the audio is sent to Apple's servers for recognition.
- To translate, turn on "Translate the subtitles" (see below), then click OK.
Recognition runs in the background, so you can keep working; it can be cancelled from the status bar. When finished, a subtitle layer is added and the generated SRT is saved in ~/Library/Application Support/pmix/pmix/subtitles/. Subtitle text cannot be edited line by line inside the app.
Live subtitles (microphone / line-in)
- In the same dialog, choose "Sound input device — recognize live (microphone / line-in)" and pick the device and spoken language (live subtitles cannot auto-detect the language).
- Recognition runs only while the scene is in Preview or on Program.
- To change the device or language later, right-click the subtitle layer and choose "Sound input and spoken language…".
Translation
- Translation engine:
- Apple Translation (on this Mac): translates offline. Requires macOS 26 or later and the language packs installed in System Settings → General → Language & Region → Translation Languages.
- OpenAI translation (online): enter your API key first in Settings → AI Translation. The subtitle text is sent to the configured service.
- Translate to: the target language.
- Show: Original + translation (two lines) / Translation only / Original only.
- Existing subtitle layers can be translated with right-click "Translate subtitle…"; afterwards, right-click "Show ▸" switches the display. Live subtitles are translated as you speak.
Subtitle style
Right-click a subtitle layer and choose "Set subtitle style…": Font, Size (8–120 pt), Color, Position X (0 = left, 50 = center, 100 = right) and Position Y (0 = top, 100 = bottom; measured at the bottom of the text). Text has a thin black outline; there is no background box option.
Subtitles appear in preview, program and external output, always on top. Speech recognition requires allowing pmix in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Speech Recognition; live subtitles also need microphone access.
